What is century plant?

The century plant, also known as Agave americana, is a succulent plant native to Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States. It belongs to the Agavaceae family and is characterized by its rosette of thick, spiky leaves that can grow up to six feet long.

Contrary to its name, the century plant typically lives between 10 to 30 years before blooming a tall stalk with yellow flowers. This flowering event usually occurs towards the end of the plant's lifespan, hence the misconception that it only blooms once every 100 years.

The century plant is often used in landscaping for its striking appearance and low maintenance requirements. It is drought-tolerant and prefers well-draining soil and full sunlight. The sap of the century plant can be toxic, so care should be taken when handling it.

In addition to its ornamental value, the century plant has been traditionally used by indigenous peoples for various purposes, such as fiber for making rope and textiles, food, and medicinal uses. Today, it is also used in the production of tequila and mezcal.
